The Soviet M-1969 Ushanka
A Cold War winter classic, made for everyday wear.
The 1969 Soviet uniform reform brought a standardized approach to military clothing, including winter headwear. The M69 Ushanka became a familiar part of that uniform, with its dense fur, fold-down ear flaps, and distinctive metal insignia.
This newly manufactured version pairs the military-inspired shape with synthetic faux fur, a quilted lining, and a removable red-star badge.
A practical answer to bitter winters
For soldiers stationed along Siberian borders, winter headwear needed to cover the ears, stay in place, and cope with long hours in the cold. The Ushanka’s folding flaps made that coverage easy to adjust.
Dense synthetic fur, often nicknamed "fish fur," offered an alternative to natural sheepskin. Its place in Soviet winter uniforms became part of the hat’s Cold War identity.
Dense outer layer
Thick synthetic pile helps shield the head from cold drafts.
Adjustable coverage
Lower the flaps for warmth or tie them up over the crown.
Recognizable design
A distinctive military silhouette that works with modern winter clothing.
The appeal today is much the same: useful coverage, a simple shape, and enough character to stand apart from an ordinary winter cap.
Materials & construction

Heavyweight faux fur
A dense, weather-treated synthetic outer helps keep cold drafts out while staying soft against the skin. No animal fur is used.

Diamond-quilted crown
Quilted thermal batting adds insulation beneath the fur. The thicker lining gives the hat a snug feel, so check your measurement before choosing a size.

Detachable cockade
The gold-tone, red enamel-accented insignia attaches with rear metal prongs. Remove it for a plain black finish, then gently brush the fur back into place.
Three ways to wear
Under the chin: Coverage around the ears, cheeks, and nape.
Over the crown: Flaps folded up for the classic uniform profile.
At the nape: Ear coverage with the front of your face open.
Size & fit
Wrap a soft measuring tape around your head, about 1 inch above your eyebrows. The quilted lining gives this hat a snug fit. If you are between sizes, have thick hair, or prefer extra room, choose the larger size.
